Heroes: Legends of the Phoenix
« on: Sun 18 Jan 2009 20:42:52 »
Thought I'd incorporate the forum name in the title. XP Anyway, I'll summarise the concept and post a bio template up and you guys can start PMing them to me!

Concept: Essentially, the same as Heroes. People all over the world are starting to show signs of weird and wonderful abilities that manifest themselves in different ways - either all at once with explosive or volatile results, or slowly over time as the individual comes to grips with it. Very few people know about this and those that do either want to research or exploit this phenomenon, with the gifted people used as mere pawns either way. There are hidden threats to those that display these abilities, threats that will become apparent as the affected individuals become more brazen in displaying their ability. The focus of the RP is how each person reacts to these powers and how they struggle to cope with it. With some fantastic conflicts along the way. XP

Rules: The main rule is one power per person and this is not one that can be broken in any way. However, one ability may have more than one application, which is fine. What this kind of RP allows is the exploration of how a power can be used and goes more in-depth to its applications than the comic-style setting does. As an example, Fire Control would allow you to create, manipulate, subdue or incite existing fires and even heat and give you an immunity to this element, purely because you're essentially a conduit for it. Other than the main rule the normal RPing rules apply.

Setting: I'm tentatively going to say Earth, so go nuts, though I'd prefer if we all stuck to a single location so we can roleplay around each other and meet up and stuff. That said, I don't want to stifle you, so if you'd rather live in America or Europe go ahead. We can always still have the characters meet and whatnot. Obviously, the main location I'd prefer is London, England.

Example Powers

Before I post a bio template and then my own bio in a seperate post I thought I would list some example powers that could be used, as well as some of their potential implications. Feel free to create your own or edit these in some way, I just want to fuel your creativity!

Flight: You can defy the laws of gravity and propel yourself through the air at will. You can just hover or move at incredible speeds, potentially breaking the sound barrier if you push yourself enough. You have natural defences against the effects this has, including above-average eyesight, eyes are resistant to the high velocity winds while flying and so on.

Telepathy: You can hear the thoughts of others within a large radius. You can filter these out to hear one specifically or block them out completely as you come to grips with the power. At advanced stages you can communicate with other people in this way, projecting your thoughts into the minds of others. People won't sense you while you read their thoughts.

Healing Factor: You can heal practically any injury incredibly fast. Nothing can keep you down for long and if a limb were to be severed you could restore it by holding it to the stump within three minutes or so of it coming off. Additionally you can never be knocked out with conventional means (such as blows to the head) though intense pain could cause you to lose consciousness, as you still feel the full pain of the injuries. Additionally, while a bullet to the head wouldn't kill you a solid object speared through your skull would. Your brain has to be alive for your healing factor to function. A bullet leaves living tissue behind but a solid object, like a pole, would damage the brain too much. In theory, if your head is severed and re-attached within three minutes, you could survive. Drugs that affect your mind work as normal, as they don't do damage, so anesthetic would knock you out.

Fire Control: You can create and manipulate fire. It can't harm you and you could turn a lighter into a raging inferno, or put out a burning building yourself. You don't have to touch the flames but be within a fairly close range to affect it. You can also manipulate heat to a limited extent, such as leeching it from other people or objects. Obviously your clothes are not immune, though you could easily prevent damage to them through your control.

Air Control: You can manipulate the air around you. You can create light breezes or force gale winds and even bring hurricanes or tornadoes under your control. Creating a full size tornado from nothing would take time but is within your ability. You have a greater range to manipulate the air than Fire Control but anything on a huge scale takes more time. You can also create small shockwaves around you with this ability.

Earth Control: You can manipulate the natural earth and its minerals, as well as alloys that contain natural metals (as metal is a mineral). Your range of control is limited but you can potentially reshape the ground around you. You could subdue the effects of an earthquake in a small area but not eliminate the quake itself, and vice versa (you can only create a quake in a limited area).

Water Control: You can manipulate water to your whim. That is, hydrogen dioxide and anything containing it (like blood). Again, your range of control is limited but you can potentially manipulate the blood within another persons body. However, influencing the blood to behave in any way other than normal can have severe detrimental effects for the victim. You can choose to move anything within the water or choose to let it fall through, so you can essentially purify any water you control.

Particle Phasing: Not quite as powerful as it sounds, this ability lets you "phase" through any kind of matter at all. You simply move through it, not being affected by the solid matter. This is something you have to consciously do, so you could potentially be shot but if you're aware of the gun you could activate your ability in time for the bullet to pass through. You can even pass through liquids or gasses, though you would have to hold your breath for these and could only last that long before needing more oxygen. Obviously, you can pass through living matter as well and potentially cause devastating damage to them internally.

Teleportation: You can disappear from one location and appear at another instantaneously. There is a slight "whoosh" noise when you disappear as the air around you rushes to fill the void you leave, causing a slight air disturbance in a small area for anyone around you.  You retain your momentum when you teleport as well, so if you're falling at terminal velocity and teleport to the ground you will impact at terminal velocity. You can reduce momentum by teleporting several times in quick succession in the opposite direction (this means you can teleport to several feet above the ground and then move slightly higher several times in a row to reduce the momentum, eventually landing at a survivable rate). You can teleport other objects and even people with you, though the latter would likely be severely disorientated and must be in contact with you (or something you carry) to move with you. Additionally you must be within line-of-sight to where you want to go, as you need to know where you want to end up. You can potentially teleport by memory, but this takes time and focus as you need to have a clear image of the destination. The same applies to teleporting by photos or posters and a huge distance could leave you dangerously exhausted.

EDIT #1: I thought I would mention this. There is no power or piece of technology that can detect someone with these abilities. It is simply not possible to know who may have power and who may not. That is one restriction on the powers that I feel I must note.

That isn't a limited list, so by all means, create your own! The greater the variety, the better!

Name: William Ashfall

Age: 21

Gender: Male

Nationality: English

Occupation: Amateur Journalist

Physical Description: William’s most obvious feature is his Native American heritage. While he was born and raised in England his great-grandmother was Native American and this can be seen in William’s features. Most noticeably his skin is darker and he has a similar facial structure, though it is not as prominent as his parents. His hair is pure black and he wears it at about neck length and evenly layered. His eyes are a bright blue and he stands at about 6 feet with a slim build due to his hobby of swimming.

Personality: William is fairly outgoing and has been brought up to value honesty and truth above all else, a trait ingrained into him by his father. As his father brought him up alone he is extremely close to him and considers him the most important person in his life. William finds it easy to speak to people and is able to get them to open up to him fairly quickly, a skill that he finds invaluable as a journalist.

Power/Ability: Fire Control

Background: William discovered his ability when he was about 10 years old and his father helped him get to grips with his newfound powers. He has nurtured them in secret and not used them in front of anyone but his father, who monitored his abilities as he grew older. He regularly performed medical examinations on William, which he complied with without complaint. As his father was a leader in his field of medical research he trusted him completely. When he turned 16, however, the tests stopped and all his father would say was that they were no longer necessary.

Most recently his father performed one final medical examination and left with the results without saying a word to William, leaving the young journalist worried. His father had also been behaving oddly, often appearing weary and short-tempered. Because of this a small rift had begun to form between them, something that William resents. After several months of no contact his father asked him for this final examination and subsequently disappeared without a trace. William has decided to try and track him down in an effort to confront his father about his actions.

Name: Edward “Eddie” Davis
Age: 25
Gender: Male
Nationality: British
Occupation: Unemployed

Physical Description:
Edward isn’t particularly athletic, nor is he particularly tall or short. In face he is rather average all around, to his dismay. His mother tries to reassure him by telling him he’s “just more normal than everyone else.” He has scruffy brown hair long enough to cover his ears, and usually has stubble, no matter how often he shaves.

Personality:
Others may consider Edward to be lazy and without drive or ambition – and they’d be right. Edward resigned himself to being “Mr Average”, having no particular skills or talents, and so he gave up completely, settling himself into a simple data entry job. Edward is by no means boring; in fact he is usually the first up for a drink and the last to leave. He likes to crack jokes, usually with a cynical edge, and can be quite charming. Despite his average life and less than average outlook on life, he has always had a nagging feeling that he was meant for something more.

Power/Ability:
Telekinesis: The ability to move objects from a distance at will.

Background:
Edward grew up feeling the failure of the family. He has one brother 2 years his senior, Harry, who is already running his own company in the heart of London. His father constantly nagged him to do better, “why can’t you be more like your brother?” while his mother tried to be supportive. Growing up ever more conflicted as the years went by, Edward got himself an easy job and left home, moving just outside of London in a small town in Kent by the name of Craddington, what Edward affectionately calls “Cruddington”. While not particularly a small town, it is still obscure and out of the way.

Edward discovered his ability at a young age but hid it away from his family, afraid he had done wrong. Over the year he never really mastered it at a level any more useful than retrieving small objects when he were too lazy to get up, or for playing tricks on people.

Name: Daniel Brace
Age: 36
Gender: Male
Nationality: White American
Occupation: Classified

Physical Description: Daniel stands around 6ft tall with short black hair and brown eyes. Due to his career he is well built, somewhere between athletic and well toned this is of course maintained and he is very fit. He has a couple of scars, most of which are bullet wounds, one on his right thigh, one in his right shoulder and one on his left upper arm which was actually caused by a deep graze.

Personality: Daniel has been in a military environment most of his life and as such he believes greatly in the chain of command, he follows the orders of his superiors without question and will do anything to achieve his objectives. Unfortunately all his time and dedication to the military means he is lacking in social skills and would be described as a workaholic by most.

Power/Ability: Space Control

Background: Daniel’s father served a short stint in the military but believed that made him a true patriot, so he spent all of Daniel’s childhood drilling the military and patriotism into Daniel and his younger brother Jason. Due to this upbringing Daniel joined the military as soon as he came of age something his parents were very proud of, in a way he hated his parents because they left him very little choice in his future and became envious of his brother when he heard that Jason had refused to join the military and had run away.
Military life was a lot similar to how his life had been at home so Daniel found he didn’t suffer from the initial shock that some new recruits do when they join. Daniel had always been a good shot, from the day his father first took him to a firing range he had discovered this and it didn’t take long for his instructors to realise this as well. Once this was known Daniel was trained as a sniper, so he received in depth training in recon and stealth techniques.
Around five years into his service Daniel was selected to join the elite Delta Force unit, this meant he practically lost all ties with his family but it didn’t bother him. In his time in Delta Force, Daniel saw conflict a number of times and was commended for his sniping abilities a number of times, though unofficially of course. A number of years later Daniel was selected to join a shadow organisation called ‘White’ where he…

Space Control - Space control begins with the ability to teleport yourself to anywhere you can see (Think Jumper) the more practice and developed the power becomes the easier it is to teleport longer distances. After much development it moves on to the ability to teleport objects, for example: You could throw a bottle at someone on the other side of the room and teleport the bottle closer to them.
